What is gluten-free wine?

Gluten is that sneaky little protein that can cause all sorts of trouble for those with gluten intolerance or celiac disease. Even if you’re just ditching it because your body feels better without it, we totally get it! The struggle is real when gluten pops up in so many of our favourite foods and drinks.

But here’s the good news - you don’t have to give up wine! The majority of wines are naturally gluten-free. The fermentation process doesn’t involve gluten either, and in almost every case, wine contains less than 20 parts per million of gluten, meaning it’s safe for a gluten-free diet.

That said, a tiny bit of gluten can sneak into wine on rare occasions. This usually happens in one or two ways: First, some winemakers use gluten as a fining agent instead of traditional animal-based ones (like egg whites or gelatin) to make their wines vegan-friendly. Second, wine aged in oak barrels sealed with wheat paste might pick up a trace of gluten.
